Chosen Family

At Tannen and Peter’s game changing wedding there was a lot of talk about their chosen family. Who are totally awesome side note. (Yes I’m talking to you Jory and Dan) This is some of my mine. I am so incredibly lucky to have found them. To Luz and Gaelle specifically, I love you so much although I may not say it all the time. You are my chosen family.

As you read this I am driving down the coast to a pretty exciting shoot in Zihua. (More on that later.) Gotta love timed posts. I was just able to sneak it in while packing my equipment up.

Last year on Christmas Eve I took a bunch of polaroids with the Fuji Instamax I have which you can see here. It was such a success that I took some more this year with my Holga and polaroid back combo.

There’s something about this shot that I love. I was walking around Capitol Hill in Seattle when I got kicked out of the backstage area of the Capitol Hill Block Party for taking photos (Who knew a backstage pass didn’t mean free rein to take photos of the artists? At least I got a couple rolls off before they got me…)

When I was in the States for weddings this summer I had the chance to shoot a lot of film. A lot. I haven’t really posted anything yet, but now that my crazy fall is winding down I’m hoping to get everything up here. Here is some from a trip with the family to Hampton Beach, NH and a couple stragglers from a cloudy day on the Cape. All Portra 400.

I’m spending the night in Miami after almost a week in St. Lucia. After having an awesome few days with Heather, Tomas and their friends and family, I had a chance to stay in Soufriere the night before national elections. It was a little crazy to say the least, but I had a blast and the rain let up enough to shoot some film so it was a win win. Either way I’m ready to be going home tomorrow. I love traveling by myself, but sometimes it’s a little draining. Next time I’m going to have to find a partner in crime.

Since I’m going back to two weddings and a messy house I figured I should blog a little something to tide everyone (i.e. the four and a half people that read my blog) over.

The rest of the Guadalajara polaroids. I’m still in St. Lucia riding out the rain at the Downtown Hotel in the heart of Soufriere. Hopefully it will let up a bit so I can walk around and get some shots. Fingers crossed.

I just spent the morning shooting the annual Revolution Day parade and am now running off to a wedding. Unfortunately I will miss the pig chase and greased pole, but at least I got to shoot some film. Here is one from last year.

Way Expired Film.

I just got a bunch of expired film developed that I found while moving. The rolls are easily from four or five years ago. They were scanned like crap by a local lab in Vallarta, but I kind of like how the scratches, dust and bad color give the images this sort of surreal quality. These are straight scans. Cross processed, but no editing.

Last year I spent November 1 and 2 in Patzcuaro, Michoacan. The night of the 1st Regina and I crouched in the corner of the cemetery in Janitzio velando the dead with the women of the surrounding pueblos. As dawn broke I took out my Holga and started to document what was happening around me. On the 2nd we visited the other towns and their cemeteries. Even though I had my Nikon and shot plenty with it, the images that I truly love are what came out of the Holga. Something about the rawness of the images through a plastic view finder that a digital camera doesn’t seem to be able to capture.
