Jaime+Eric Day After Photo Session | San Pancho, Mexico

Jaime and Eric held their wedding at an all-inclusive to accommodate their friends and family and make it as easy as possible for them to not have to do anything at all while down here to celebrate their wedding. Since that’s not really their style they decided to spend a week after the wedding in San Pancho, also known as my hood. We got to hang out and have some drinks together which I loved because really my clients are more and more getting to be my close friends. We also spent one afternoon shooting around town together from the ruins to the beach. Jaime had this idea that she wanted to do a Frida themed shoot for part of it and she totally played the part while Eric had to forcibly not smile because as everyone knows Diego Rivera was always super serious in photographs. At least that’s what Jaime and I told him.

Michelle and the kids | Westport, MA

When I was in Westport I had a chance to hang out with an old friend and her super cool kids. Michelle and I worked together back in the day at The Back Eddy. If you ever find yourself in Westport, MA definitely go to the Eddy for a margarita on the deck. Amazing sunsets on the river and delicious food. Since then she’s had two gorgeous kids who are way too old now. I seriously can’t believe how time flies.

Besides being an awesome mother Michelle also knits up a storm. I took some photos of some of her work while we waited for Julia and Ethan to get back from school. This is almost all Kodak Portra 400 with a few digital files thrown in as well.

Ethan wanted to show me some of his toys. These are Legos. When did they become so crazy technical? What happened to all the little people that you stick on one flat piece of green and build multicolored brick buildings? I told him I didn’t believe him. He assured me I was wrong and these most definitely are in fact Legos.

I leave in a little less than three hours to go spend a week in the Sierra Madre with a Huichol family who lives in San Pancho. I have been waiting for them to invite me for a long time and now that time has finally come I am a little nervous to say the least. I know I will be in good hands with my girls Selina, Linda, Perla, and Lupita, but I have no idea what to expect. I’m brining three bags of film, my Contax 645, and as a backup my Nikon. Just in case something happens with the Contax I don’t want to be without a camera for the ceremonies. Here are some black and white portraits on film I did a few weeks ago. Some are from the circus rehearsals and some from around town. All processing by Richard Photo Lab in California.

The grand performance was last night and there are no words to describe how proud I am of these kids. They worked so hard the past ten days and performed an unthinkable task in putting on a show with such little time for preparation. They rose to the occasion and then some. I’m leaving for California tomorrow so I haven’t had time to go through all of the photos yet, but here is one of my favorites from backstage with the kids. This is Ali. We have the same birthday.

I am trying to get all of my editing done in order to enjoy a little bit of the festivities in town. Add to that my project for the Colectivo and I have pretty much been stuck at my desk for the past week. This is an outtake of the project that Luz and I are presenting on the 27th and 28th in the Plaza del Sol in San Pancho.

I took some photos for my friend Sara the other day to promote her fire dancing. She is amazing. I was trying a new technique where I used a gelled flash to get more of her face lit up. Shooting fire dancers is a little on the difficult side since they are always moving and the light source is constantly changing so often the dancers faces aren’t as exposed as the fire. If you use straight flash you lose the effect of the fire so that’s where the gel came into play. I’m pretty pleased with the way they came out.

Family Photo Shoot Nuevo Vallarta

Daniel, Stephanie, Cate, and Rand make up this awesome family who I had a chance to do a family portrait shoot with a few weeks ago in Nuevo Vallarta. It’s always interesting doing family shoots because there isn’t as much contact before hand like there is with weddings. I’m basically walking into it blind and hoping that everybody is cool with me and my style. I was lucky this time because they were super fun. As a family from Austin should be I think.

I had this great idea to get balloons for the kids and do all sorts of fun photos with them, but the hotel only had balloons without helium. They were sad balloons, but actually worked pretty well to keep Rand occupied. Not that he needed it.

I absolutely love this shot. A little random, but it reminds me of summer.

Family Portrait Session Nuevo Vallarta

Rena Bruins contacted me to set up a family portrait session for the four generations of her family that were going to be down here in Mexico! Unfortunately when I got to the hotel in Nuevo Vallarta the afternoon of the shoot there was a pretty somber vibe in the air. Rena’s grandmother had heart problems the night before and was rushed to the hospital. This meant we were without the grandparents and parents plus a few others, not to mention the fact the everyone was preoccupied with what had happened. We switched things up a bit and I ended up doing a session with who was left over, including Joel and Wendy who had gotten engaged recently!

Then came the rest of the family… how cute is Rena’s daughter Anya!

There was this great fence that I saw as we walked down to the beach. These are definitely some of my favorites from the day.

And who doesn’t want to take photos of super cute kids on a giant chess board?

When we got to the beach I took some more of Joel and Wendy…

They were all really psyched to do a jumping photo, but the sun hadn’t gone down enough to do a shadow jump so this is what we got…

And then it was time to say goodbye to Mexico…
