entreAmigos more fun time in the summer

I’ve been sitting on the rest of the summer workshop photos and since school just started and we have more scholarships than ever this year I figured it was a good time to get them up on the blog. We are in need of donations for the school scholarships and along with the entreAmigos public school scholarships I am going to be heading up donations for the local Huichol girls to go to the Montessori school. I should have more information in the next week or two. Please contact me at jillfoto@gmail.com or go the the entreAmigos website: www.entreamigos.org.mx to make a donation.

This year there were more workshops than ever before, including cooking, sewing, painting, dance, circus training, ping pong, arts and crafts, and English. The big hit, however, was the long board skateboarding workshop that the guys from Treee Skateboarding put on. Nicole even got into the fun… We are now working on putting in a skate park next to the new entreAmigos Community Center. Please contact me for more information or to donate.

Juan.

This is Juan. He sells cotton candy in San Pancho. He also has a trampoline that he sets up in the plaza. I have a problem approaching people I don’t know to take their photograph. Especially Mexicans. Don’t gots no balls. During Semana Santa I saw Juan walking up and down the beach selling his cotton candy and finally one day it was so hot that he was taking a break on the malecon near La Perla. I really wanted to approach him and I told Bola who immediately was like, “Hey can my girlfriend take a photo of you?” Which of course embarrassed me to the point of no return and had me backtracking trying to ask him myself and looking like an idiot, but Juan was so lovely and said yes and I snapped away for a few minutes. I printed the one on the right for him and brought it to him at the trampoline the next day. His face lit up when he saw the photo and he just kept saying how wonderful I was. No Juan. You are the wonderful one.

New Years on the Beach

So it’s a little late, but I’ve been busy… On first day of the year I had the great idea of taking photos of everyone feeling the effects of the night before. Well, not everyone, but I tried. Here’s a little montage of the first day of 2010 in San Pancho, Mexico.

These first two are actually from New Years Eve. I love sparklers.

and here are the peeps…

and a couple more that I couldn’t fit into the collage… who doesn’t want to see cute babies, crazy sand creations, and me?!

lucha libre san pancho style

If you’ve never been to a Lucha Libre match then you’re missing out. Mexican wrestling is part of the culture here and completely different than the WWF idea of professional wrestling that most Americans have. Bola of Radio Estacion Pirata and friends Chupon and Cocho of REP producciones are going to be putting on there third Lucha Libre in San Pancho on February 21. It’s definitely something you don’t want to miss. Here’s a slideshow of my photos from the last lucha libre to give you a taste of what’s to come.

Side note: I was super excited to go back and take shots of the wrestlers. I spoke a lot with one of the girls (the one who is bleeding in the last few shots) and when I saw her bleeding I couldn’t even take photos. To be honest I freaked out a little. I didn’t believe that it was just part of the show… well it was, but it was still real blood so I feel like I was kind of justified with the freaking out.

Destination Wedding San Pancho, Nayarit

Christian and Debby’s wedding was one of the most moving events I have been to in Mexico, both because of their love for each other and the spirituality that went into it. They were married by a Shaman and the ceremony involved breaking open different fruits to feed to each other and a ‘unity belt’. That being the case I wasn’t surprised when they told me they didn’t want any posed formals. What I love about that is I had more time to capture those small moments that you so easily miss like when they walked down to the water to rinse the pomegranate off their hands.
