Road Trip | Austin to LA

I had every intention of making a 2013 review post with my personal and editorial work of the past year, but when I started selecting images I realized that there is so much that I haven’t posted and it really just makes more sense to start there rather than a review of the year.

When I shot SXSW last March (see the images here, here, and here) I had already planned on going to LA afterwards so when a friend of mine asked if I would want to drive his fluorescent green 1969 Oldsmobile 68 from Austin to LA it was a no brainer. This car was insanity and I count myself lucky that I was able to haul ass in it cross country. Realistically you can’t go over 80 mph so hauling ass is a stretch.

I was stoked to shoot some film and capture the good old Route 66 Americana. Obviously I brought my copy of On The Road (which I reread several times a year) with me to the States because for some reason I fortuitously knew this trip was going to happen.

Year in Review | Weddings 2013

I’ve never done a year in review. This is mostly due to the fact that my major season starts in November and ends in May, but for the past two years I’ve been shooting all over the US as well so I now don’t even really have a season. The other reason is that it is so incredibly daunting to me. I’m an absolutely awful editor of my own work and try to put it off as long as I possibly can hence why my editorial/documentary work website is taking oh so long to make happen. Here’s some of my favorites from what is supposed to be considered work, but is actually me just having a ton of fun with my clients and documenting it. There’s a few weddings that can’t be shown because of publishing rights and there are more than a few that are still being edited so realistically this is January through October, but man am I lucky enough to have been able to shoot on both coasts of Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Los Angeles, Massachusetts, Maine, Connecticut, and New York in those ten months. That’s not counting Texas for SXSW and another jaunt to LA for some well deserved personal time. There was a lot of traveling in 2013 and more to come in 2014. Italy anyone?

This is the rest of the film from Costa Rica. Punta Negra is a super small town near the slightly larger, but yet not quite bustling metropolis of Tamarindo. These are all from in and around town and at the gorgeous house friends of ours are lucky enough to own. If you get a chance to go down to that area you definitely have to check out Lola’s on the beach. Amazing location and food. It’s easy to want to spend days there. You can see the square format images here. All film all the time. A mixture of Kodak Portra 400 and some expired stuff.

Costa Rica Squared

Traveling to tropical lands gets kind of boring for me these days. I know it may sound obnoxious, but it’s true. No, wait, it isn’t all tropical lands, just the beach front ones. As soon as I get there I realize that wherever I am is not as amazing as where I am so lucky to call home. I still take photos though. This is the square stuff from Costa Rica. Yashica Mat with mostly Kodak Ektar film. The rest is soon to come.
