I always tell people how lucky I am because I am able to make a living doing the thing I love most in the place I love most (not to mention being invited to travel to insanely beautiful places all over), but what really makes my job amazing are the incredible people I get the chance to document. Whether in Mexico or abroad the clients that I work with only have one thing in mind… love. More than the love they have for each other it’s about the love they have for their family and friends. That’s where a destination wedding comes in. As the time ran out on my brother’s wedding a few years ago I heard myself saying, that’s it? It’s all over? All of the planning and rehearsing, not to mention money, was for eight measly hours of celebration? A destination wedding takes that 8 hours and multiplies it by 3, 4, and sometimes 5 days. Five days full of the most important people in your lives. Five days of your best friends from all over getting the chance to hang out together. Five days of laughter, tears, stories, and memories. It is here we start the list of how to throw a kick ass destination wedding.
Step 1: Find the perfect location. In Ashley and Jeff’s case it was the Hotel Verana in Yelapa, Mexico. Accessible only by boat Yelapa is a teeny fishing village just south of Yelapa. It’s where we go to relax when we need to get away from our very own little village so that says a lot. Verana is a handful of impecably designed casitas perfect for spending a week with your favorite people.
Step 2: Invite your favorite people. The second best thing about a destination wedding is it allows you to invite only the creme de la creme. 600 guests? No thanks. 50 of your closest friends and family? Yes please.
Step 3: Have a welcome party or in Ashley and Jeff’s case a pool party. Get everybody together and start the weekend off right. You invited this people for a reason and it’s even more fun getting those you love to know all the others who you love just as much.
Along the way don’t forget why you are doing this. It’s not about the details (although when you take a look at their custom towels with their awesome logo you might think otherwise), it’s about the time you get to spend with each other and your loved ones. That being said you don’t have to put in a ton of effort to get gorgeous details. Stay tuned for Ashley and Jeff’s minimal, but beautifully designed details when their kick ass wedding continues tomorrow.
